NCCA will be conducting umpiring certification examinations starting in July 2003. Also, NCCA will enforce the proposal, passed at the Spring 2002 BOD, meeting that requires certified umpires to umpire all NCCA games starting from 1st September 2003. This will give two months for clubs to get their members qualified. NCCA will continue to recognize Umpires who have been certified by way of attending the NCCA Umpiring Seminars. Such Umpires can continue to officiate games. These people are however encouraged to take the exam because the remuneration for such Umpires will continue to be the same ($44 per umpire, $55 should the umpire do two ends). All new people, and others, who have not been certified before, need to undergo the exam-based certification, henceforth and the remuneration will be increased accordingly. A list of certified umpires (based on both seminars and examinations) will be displayed on NCCA's website for the benefit of the clubs. The Examination Examination can be taken by paying an application fee of $15 for Registered NCCA Players. Independent people who will be taking the exam will pay a fee of $25, or an appropriate amount depending on the Player Registration fees. This application fee will be applicable for each attempt to write the exam. This money will go towards the cost of the hall, setting the question paper, and the material for the question and answer sheets. NCCA will conduct at least two (2) examinations before the deadline of 1st of September. The first one will be conducted on the weekend of July 12th, and the second one on the weekend of July 26th (the details are TBD). Candidates need to inform us of their interest in attending these examinations at least one week in advance. If these weekends don't work for your club/team, please come up with an alternate date(s) and the NCCA will try and conduct an examination on a date that works for your club/team. However, we need a minimum of 10 candidates for us to conduct an examination on dates convenient to you to reduce the overhead on the Umpiring committee. Details The examination would be of a written nature containing 50 questions to be answered in 90 minutes. It contains a mixture of objective type and short answer questions. Candidates are also required to answer an additional question on the LBW law (in addition to various LBW related questions among the 50 questions, i.e.). This question will not have any marks associated with it, but an unsatisfactory answer to this question will cause automatic disqualification. A set of sample questions will be posted on NCCA's website soon for the reference of candidates. The syllabus for Examination would be as below - Minimum PASS score to be obtained for Qualifying will be 65%. Eligibility There is no age limit (lower and higher) for taking the NCCA Umpiring Examination. No prior playing experience or knowledge of Cricket is required. Education & Assistance The NCCA and its Umpiring Committee will be willing to assist in Referring, providing education and training with respect to Cricket Umpiring. Interested candidates can contact the NCCA or its Umpiring Committee members directly. Groups of people interested in getting Umpiring education can send a note to the NCCA Executive and request that a crash course be conducted on Umpiring related matters. Attending a class (seminar) will definitely be useful to all candidates but are not a pre-requisite for appearing in the examination.
