NCCA,Inc. Comments on Umpiring Seminar |

- Umpires in NCCA - Umpiring Seminar - Seminar Survey - Seminar Comments - Spirit of the Game - Oslear's Seminar Notes - Umpiring Review Questions |
A common theme to all umpiring seminar has been the 1000 corner-case questions that dominate the time. The instructors need to do a better job of not getting into 'rat-holes' and focus on the topics covered. If every NCCA umpire understands laws of LBW - I think it will be a huge plus.
An International Umpire with vast experience need no evaluation. It is like showing light to the SUN. He was just terrific. Hope to have more people or Don himself doing it again, it adds to the experience you already have. We should accept the facts that we do need to have someone dedicated, interested rather than having one man monopolies the instructing job. Compare the level of umpiring we have achieved by relying on one man as instructor. The level of question asked and answer given back shows the level of know-hows in our umpiring community. We are good enough to evaluate what has been achieved in past few years.
More focus could be given to the LBW questions
I enjoyed Mr. Oslear's seminars. It was rather unfortunate that the slide projector somewhat worked reducing the effectiveness of what otherwise was a great seminar.
Overall good. He did sense the type of game we play here and rightfully called it "social and recreational" sport. Number of laws do not apply to us and therefore must not imposed here. As he stated "NCCA is the administrator" and we can modify certain laws based on our playing structure here in US. I still think Eric doing very good job unfortunately no one take him seriously. All in all I give lot of credit to NCCA exec to drive the umpiring standard and awareness to highest levels. Finally we begin to enjoy the game of cricket here which is the very reason we play despite of many personal and monitory sacrifices.
We were very fortunate to have Mr. Oslear grace us with his presence and agree to spend his valuable time teaching cricketers of a recreation league, when his talents are more suited to the test level. The fact that he was willing to "come down" to our level when he could readily be doing seminars for international level umpires speaks volumes for his willingness to teach and his humility. We should be honored.
The run-out discussion using pegboards was not very clear because of poor visibility. From the back of the room, I don't think anyone could make out what he was trying to display. He needed a little stage so that he was higher.
As you must have noticed that there were a barge of irrelevant questions and unfortunate arguments disrupting the natural flow of the seminar, the attendees in future should be encouraged to take notes and a Q & A time should be allotted at the end of each day. This way some of us, who would like to miss all that unnecessary arguments to show-off ones half..... knowledge and "prove the teacher wrong" attitude, can leave early.
The seminars conducted by Mr. Oslear were excellent. It's my opinion that such seminars help in us NCCA members to improve the standard and knowledge of our game and help conduct the game in the right spirit and raise the standard of the game. It's nice to see such activities come through.
Great eye-opening seminar by Mr. Oslear. It was a delight to listen to someone who was as good at communicating his knowledge as his knowledge of the subject matter. Keep up the good work of inviting such distinguished and knowledgeable speakers.
While it is important to know the ICC rules of the game. It is a must we learn the one day rules and the NCCA games rules as well. Do not entertain frivolous and ambiguous time wasting questions be controlled. Enjoyed the Seminar very much, more such seminar will help cricket in northern California.
The most important gain was my understanding of the LBW, with help of slides. You should make sure that you get hold of the source (slides) that Mr Oslear used. Also I felt too much time was spent on details not relevant to our style of cricket here. (not Mr. Oslear's mistake, but I thought some questions from the audience were really an excuse for opening their jaws! ) -) Allotting 15 mins of question time at the end of seminar would have helped us cover more topics.
I found Mr. Oslear's seminar good to be very good. It also would be helpful in the future to explain upfront explicitly the difference between laws and regulations and why sometimes what we see on TV does not apply to our cricket.
It would have been better if we had received handouts of laws being discussed on that particular day.
I want to thank NCCA for organizing this seminar, though I have been playing cricket for a long time and also have played at good levels in India, this seminar helped me formalize the decision making in LBW's, Runouts incase of a substitute runner. The path of elimination to reach a decision was very helpful, and a recent game in which I umpired, players of either side were happy with our Umpiring efforts. Thanks again to all those who helped organize in Seminar.
Nothing much was discussed about the no balls, wides and other extras ..
These kinds of seminars bring respect and recognition for the umpiring community and teach players a lot more on the different aspects of umpiring than a formal class.
Don Oslear was real cool. He has given a jump start, we should have more of his seminars. Eric is not able to create interest among cricketers. We need to complete transformation in umpiring for our league. It is time he stops umpiring in league matches too, he screwed our match last time, may be he is not able to see properly.
