Stanford Cricket Club is the official Cricket Club of Stanford University. It has been in existence in various guises since the early years of the NCCA, but re-emerged in a new light as recently as 1999. Prior to 1999, the club had operated two teams, but they were related only in name, and not in practice. It was decided at that point to separate the two teams completely, and thence came the rebirth of Stanford Cricket Club.
Supported by the University’s Club Sports programme, Stanford is comprised of students (both undergraduate and graduate), professors (belonging to departments ranging from the business school to anthropology), and even a band of die-hard alumni. Despite having a very strong talent pool, the club has struggled to do itself justice and gain the promotion to the A-Division which it actively seeks. The loss of key student players over the summer vacation period is a significant factor in this underperformance. Going into the new millennium however, things are looking up for Stanford. Several new recruits over the last 12 months have given the team a fresh look, and a strong squad is in place, ready to mount a serious challenge for the 2000 B-Division title. The University has also proved to be very generous and supportive in providing the team with a newly constructed practice facility for the 2000 season, and a commitment to a ground to rival the best village greens in England for 2001. With this strong support from the University, and financial support from sponsors Infonox and Global Cash Access, Stanford’s 30-strong squad hope to spring a few surprises this season. |
