Set up in 1968 by the Gujarati Samaj of San Francisco as the Gujarat Samaj Cricket Club, the Spartan Cricket Club, has over the years grabbed every opportunity to play cricket. The Spartans may be amateurs, but they uphold the best traditions of cricket----sportsmanship, courtesy and hospitality. Encouraged by the Indian Cultural Association of South Bay, that has over the years also provided financial support, Spartan today boasts more than 40 players on its roaster. Today Spartan is proud to have one of the best home cricket grounds in the league. And it has worked hard to achieve this. In 1990, feeling the lack of a good home cricket ground, the Spartan Cricket Club along with the Indian Association of San Jose State University, got permission to play at the Spartan Stadium. Hence the name. Then in 1992, with tremendous support from Mr. Anderson of Caroline Davis Intermediate School and Mr. Shimada from the Oak Grove School District of San Jose, Spartan was able to establish a permanent home field at the Caroline Davis school grounds. The ground now has an artificial turf wicket, equipment storage facility and practice nets.
Spartan has been an active contributor to the Northern California Cricket Association (NCCA). In 1983, it pushed for the creation of the B division, and set up its second team. The Spartan Cricket Club sponsors the majority of the B Division trophies. For promotion of cricket in the Bay area, Spartans in 1982 & 1985, sponsored Indian and Madras Cricket teams to play in the Bay area Spartan is proud to have Mr. Bhula
Patel, one of the original club founders, as the current Chairman and an active
player. The honorary club-members, who have played for Spartans over the years,
include Indian Ranji Trophy players -- Kiran Joshipura, Atul Mehta, Niranjan
Mehta, Urmi Modi, Ramesh Nagdev and Sid Trivedi. |
