Santa Clara Cricket Club has been a member of the Northern California Cricket Association (NCCA) since 1987. Started by Stan Kent and his fellow cricket enthusiasts playing on a matting wicket, the club has quickly grown into one of the largest and most active clubs in the NCCA. Within a few years of its inception, SCCC was recognized as the official cricket club of the city of Santa Clara.
Its ground, located in the City of Santa Clara, is an excellent, picturesque facility that hosts many of the NCCA premier tournaments. These include the National Inter-League Tournament, NCCA Six-a-Side Tournament, and A-League/B-League All-Star Game. SCCC has one of the largest and best practice facilities in the Bay Area, complete with an astroturf center wicket, and 2 batting nets including one astroturf and one concrete pitch. SCCC is comprised of a varied mix of nationalities - with members from Australia, Bangladesh, Great Britain, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the West Indies. They have even managed to coax a few Americans away from baseball!
SCCC members consistently win NCCA batting, bowling and fielding awards, and are regularly selected in NCCA teams. Its members balance their on-field contributions with service off the field; strengthening the league and promoting cricket in the Bay Area. Over the years its members have served on the NCCA Grounds Committees, Selection Committees, and Executive Committee. The club has won the Most Sporting Team award four times (three in a row), the B-Division Championship, D-division Championship, the Miller Cup, Mueller Cup and the Bank of India Cup. In 1998, they also won the NCCA Six-a-side championship, which included a thrilling last ball '10' from Ravi Shankar to win their semi-final. In 1999, the A-division saw the closest finish in NCCA history when the league championship went to the wire with any one of 4 teams capable of taking the top spot in the last weekend of the season. The SCCC Aces finished 3rd in the league standings, and played strongly into the post-season, reaching the semi-finals of the knockout Cup, and winning the Miller Cup.
SCCC celebrated its tenth year anniversary in June 1997 by hosting an 8-a-side tournament in honor of the late Austen D. Warburton who contributed significantly during its formative years. The tournament, inaugurated by Santa Clara Councilwoman Lisa Gilmore, was a grand success with most teams from the NCCA participating. The club hopes to make this tournament into an annual event in combination with a coaching camp for kids. In 1998, SCCC successfully co-hosted the National Inter-league Tournament and was privileged to welcome Sir Garfield Sobers to their home ground. In 1999, SCCC again stood at the forefront and co-hosted the National Inter-league tournament, which saw Chief Guest and batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar gracing our grounds.
