The Cougars Cricket Club was started in 1985 in the city of Mountain View, and was initially called Mountain View Cricket Club. The person who created the team was Sanjay Patel. The club’s President was Ashok Patel. In the first year of existence, Mountain View Cricket Club played 16 games and only won 1. Many teams with such a start have given up and disintegrated, but Mountain View CC knew that the only way it could go is up. The team started out by playing at Mariano Castro School and later moved to Graham Middle School. Just two years later in 1987, the team reached the Bank of India finals. Unfortunately, it ran into a much stronger opponent and lost the game. This was the first sign of how fast the team was improving.
The first significant event in the team’s history was becoming the “B” division champions in 1993. By winning the “B” division, they earned a promotion to the more talented “A” division. The “A” division proved to be a bit strong for the team at the time and it could only win 4 to 5 games. Because of their last place finish in the “A” division, they were relegated back to the “B” division. Mountain View CC changed its name to the Cougars Cricket Club in 1995. The team found another ground in San Jose and was finally able to construct a permanent astro turf wicket. With the new ground and a new attitude, the Cougars began their quest to win the “B” division again. Cougars won 13 out of 16 games in 1995 and became the “B” division champions for the second time. |
