What a great picture of Syed here...capturing his "feel good" essence...I know that his time here on earth has had a positive impact on the world...his personality, his smile, his heart and his comforting demeanor has affected us and this world in a way that a very few people can leave behind them. To me, there can be nothing greater than that.

My sincerest condolences...

Hi Abid:
I was shocked to hear about Fakeer’s untimely demise. I know what you and your family should be going through at this time. Fakeer was a good boy, well mannered and made friends with everyone he came accross. He was a gentleman both on and off the field. There is nothing we could do in such events except to pray God to give you and your family enough strength to cope with this irreparable loss and to be a guide to Fakeer’s wife and the son.

Immediately after getting the sad news I tried to contact you but your phone was full of messages. I will try to visit you one of these days, once you and your family are strong enough to see a visitor.

Dear Abid, family & friends;

When I read the news of Sid’s passing, I sat stunned trying to make sense of it all. In reading the other tributes here, many others felt the same.

Sid touched so many lives in such a positive way. His spark was contagious and his smile made you feel like his best friend, every time you’d meet.

Those of us who knew Sid thru cricket, know him as competitive and talented, but we will remember him as the epitome of good sportsmanship and the true spirit of the game.

There is a grace that great people have, which lifts them above the fray and allows them a perspective that other combatants lack. Sid had this vision and inner peace, and it will be his greatest gift and legacy to our shared past time.

Sid was a man of honesty, honor, loyalty and integrity.

Sid was my friend, and I will miss him.

May you find the peace you seek in reconciling your loss.

Sincere condolences,

One thing I do remember is when he came down to Southern California and played a game for us as a guest player while all the other players were seeking refuge till the game started. Faaqer was doing two rounds around the field. Rest In Peace Faaqer. Wish I knew you better. To Mr. Abid Ali and family, Faaqer’s wife and son Syed Kirmani and family our prayers are with you. Inna Lillahi Va Inna Ilaihi Rajaoun!

For those whose paths crossed Faaqer’s even briefly, or
whoever knew him personally, the community has lost a good cricketer, a dedicated Youth cricket coach, and a warm-hearted gem of a friend.

At Faaqer’s funeral, there was not a dry eye among the large gathering at the funeral. The large gathering of mourners proved how popular he was. Losing a child is an immense loss for a parent at any age, and Abid Ali sahab was a picture of patience until the last deedar. Needless to say, it was heart-wrenching.

May Allah (swt) grant Br. Faaqer a place in jannat-ul

Dear Abid Bhai:

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of Faaqer. May Allah give you the strength to bear this huge loss and bestow him with a place in heaven.

It’s hard for me to believe that Faqeer is no more with us. I still remember when I moved to California in 1996 and started playing Cricket over there, I came across this ever smiling young lad trying to bowl, bat and keep wickets with such great enthusiasm, and he was literally following the footsteps of his illustrious father Abid Bhai. He took Cricket quite seriously and in fact went to England for a coaching certification. I happened to play on the same club (United CC) as Abid Bhai and Faqeer for a couple of years and he was always extremely respectful and courteous towards me. Even though I haven’t seen him for several years, but I still have a vivid picture of his smiling face in my mind, which I’ll never forget.

Best regards,

Faaqer was one of those. Afer seeing the way his untimely passing has affected the circket playing community I can see that he was also a good humang being that touched a lot of people. I remember taking a diving catch to get him out and as he walked passed me he looked at me, smiled and said "Nice catch KIDO". I gained a lot of respect for him that day. I am really sad to hear this news, especially because I have played (under his captaincy) for his team in a long weekend tournament once, he was such a gentleman. We played a close one and we lost the game fighting hard though, the game came down to the last over. I was dejected at the loss, but he came and pacified and was very composed even at that bad loss. He was a nice person and a perfect gentleman.... It is a great loss to his family as well as to the entire cricketing fraternity.

I’ve known Faaqer for more than 10 years and in one of the games I played in the early nineties , I couldn’t but notice the striking similarity in bowling style of Abid and Faaqer who both played that match. Faaqer was fun to be with , humble and down to earth and polite to a fault. Over the next several years when we were coached by Abid , Faaqer drove his father to the practice grounds (mostly)and his dedication and love for cricket and his father was there for everyone to see.

I really cannot tell you the respect I have for Abid and they don’t make cricketers like him anymore. The kind that lives and breathes for the betterment of the sport. Faaqer was like his father. True gentleman and a nice human being.
The loss to his family is beyond anything that we can imagine. I don’t believe in a lot of things but I would like to believe that there is something out there with a sense of justice and fairness that will look out for Faaqer’s family...his wife and his son. Life is just unfair and it cannot stay that way.

Faaqer , my friend , rest in peace.

I knew Faaqer from 2000. He was a wonderful man, always smiling and jovial. He never had anything negative to say about anyone.

In 2004 Faaqer asked me to join his new club Tracy United Cricket Club in BACA. He knew I had a strong desire to represent the North West regional team and a strong performance in BACA would have improved my chances. We were teammates in NCCA (San Mateo) as well as BACA (TUCC), so I saw him both days of the weekend for most of the summer of 2004. Besides the time on the field, we spent endless hours in pre-game planning and post-game analysis. He was so passionate about the game.

But more important than his love of the game was his love of humanity and his trust in people. TUCC comprised a diverse group of very talented players and compared to them I was mediocre. But Faaqer always believed in me even when I doubted myself. He made me feel very special and brought the best out of me. And I loved him for it.

I’ve never had a captain who could bring himself to the level of all his players as well as Faaqer did. He had a rare quality of adapting to the level of the person he was interacting with and treated them with utmost respect.

We were very close back then. I saw less of him the last couple of years but we still greeted each other with hugs and talked about the good old days. He was my teammate, my captain, my friend, and my brother.

The last time I remember meeting him was when he umpired the last game of my club’s 2006 regular season. It was the second day of the month of Ramadan and I was fasting. We were defending a low total and I was charging in to bowl with a nothing-to-lose mindset. Faaqer, always the one to look out for his friends, advised me not to exert myself while fasting.

I shall miss him dearly.

Sitting here a few days after one of the most terrible days of my life, I still can’t believe that we actually lost Fasqir. Specially when on Wednesday night we stood together in the back of the community center in Fremont during Captain’s meeting and ate Samosas.

He was so excited about the upcoming weekend because he was eager to kick of the 2008 season. He was a great man who would do anything for his friends. As long as I’ve been involved with NCCA, I never heard any controversies involving Faaqir. He was a great man and we miss him.

I played with Faaqer when his dad was playing for my club - Fresno Cricket Club - back in the mid-80s. We were both boys still learning the game among experienced men and we got along very well. He had a great competitive spirit. I’m very sad about this. I hope Abid and the family will make it OK through this difficult time. Players up here in Portland received the news and people have expressed their regrets among our local email list.

I first met Faaqer in the early eighties when he accompanied his father to the Stanford nets. Always impecabbly attired in cricket whites he was a lad with a mischievous sparkle in his eyes, a ready smile and an unbounded passion for cricket. He also idolized his father and it was so touching to see him imitating Abid’s walk, bowling action and batting stance. When I met him again years later, meetings that always started with a broad smile and a bear hug, I still saw so much of that sparkling little boy in the lovely young man he had become and will always do so in my mind’s eye.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Faaqer’s family at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

We pray that the Faaqar Family finds the courage and determination to bear this irreparable loss by accepting Faaqar had served his family, friends and all whom he interacted with fairness, equality and love.
I can remember his passion and enthusiasm for the game of cricket, while working with him to obtain a cricket field in Tracy area for Tracy United Cricket Club. He worked long hour and scarified his personal time to meet with ground authorities and the cricket community in the area to make it reality that exists today. Faaqar Bhai, Job Well Done! And thank you for all you have done for family, friends and cricket.

Dear Coach,

When we went out to Hyderabad last year it was Sid who made me feel most welcome. He was a big hearted cricketer and a big hearted man who loved the game and respected it. He was very proud of his father and he joyfully recollected to me how you had hit the winning runs against England and taken 4 wickets.

I cannot tell you how saddened I am to hear that Sid bhai has passed away. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. My heartfelt condolences to you and all of your family. I will remember Sid in my prayers.

I know Sid is in paradise now and I hope he is there doing what he loves, playing cricket.

God bless you Sid.

Dear Abid:

Even though I moved to India about 5 years ago, I still cherish those coaching camps that you used to run for us at Santa Clara and in the first of those many camps, I met Faqeer. Fine young man and always with a cheerful smile. I honestly am too shocked to even express my sorrow. I knew him enough to know that his near and dear ones will miss him a lot. Dear Abid, I wish you with all the strength that only the Almighty can give you.

Dear Abid:

It is with a heavy heart and great sorrow that I write this condolence note on your son’s untimely demise. Over the years I had gotten to know Faaqer and he was a wonderful person that had a special place for cricket in his heart. The memory of seeing him with is wife and son at a Giant’s game late year is still very vivid. I chatted with him and his wife briefly. He was a very fine young man who was always very courteous and has a smile on his face. There was an incident last year during one of the matches and it was very evident Faaqer put himself in the middle to break up the fight and took some blows in the bargain without once retaliating.

I can’t profess to know your pain nor can I claim I understand your loss. I do however send you, your wife, Faaqer’s wife and son my heartfelt condolences and pray God gives you all the strength at this time of need.

Regards,

I came out to Northern California in 1992, and it was shortly thereafter that I first met Syed Faaqer Ali. I knew him first as the son of Syed Abid Ali, my mother’s favourite cricketer. Over the years though, I got to know Faaqer a lot better, as a cricketer, and as a gentleman. In the last two years I watched him passing on his sheer love for the game to eager youngsters, and for many of them he was a favourite coach.

What always stood out to me with Faaqer was his attitude to the game, and his attitude to life in general, through ups and through downs. Faaqer lived for his cricket, and amazed me with his desire to give back to the game that he felt had already given him so much. He had dreams and visions for the game in the US, and for bringing youngsters into the game around the world. And he did it all with a smile on his face, and out of pure, selfless goodness.

In 15 years of seeing him on and off the cricket field, he never had harsh words for anyone, he never complained and whined, and not for a single second did he let himself get bigger than the game he loved so much. The way he played cricket, and lived life, was a lesson to us all - and I hope we can all honour his memory by striving to adhere to the standards he set.

Faaqer - we will miss you, but your spirit and your dreams will live on, that we promise.
